Helping HANDS of Wyoming County Better Serve Families Online
When someone visits a nonprofit's website, they shouldn't have to search to understand what the organization does or how to get help.
That was the biggest challenge facing HANDS of Wyoming County, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting early childhood development, parenting education, preschool programs, and family resources throughout Wyoming County, Pennsylvania.
Their previous website contained a wealth of valuable information, but years of growth had left the content difficult to navigate. Important programs were buried in long pages of text, visitors had to work to understand available services, and the website wasn't effectively supporting the organization's mission.
Platform
Before & After
The Goal
The objective wasn't simply to create a modern-looking website; it was to create a better experience for the families, caregivers, educators, and community members who rely on HANDS every day.
The redesign focused on making the website easier to understand, easier to navigate, and easier to maintain while strengthening its visibility in search engines.
A Clearer User Experience
One of the first priorities was reorganizing the site's content around the questions visitors actually have.
Instead of overwhelming users with large amounts of text, the new website guides visitors through the organization's services with clear navigation, dedicated program pages, and action-oriented calls to action.
Families can now quickly find information about:
PA Pre-K Counts
Parents as Teachers
Family Resource Center
Family Initiatives
School Gardens
Food and diaper assistance
Contact information and enrollment
Each page was rewritten to explain programs in straightforward language while helping users understand what to expect and how to get started.
The result is a website that feels welcoming, informative, and easy to navigate for first-time visitors.
Built for Search Engines From the Ground Up
A beautiful website only works if people can find it.
As part of the redesign, I completely overhauled the site's search engine optimization (SEO).
This included:
Keyword research focused on Wyoming County families
Optimized page titles and meta descriptions
Improved page structure and heading hierarchy
Local SEO enhancements
Organization and FAQ schema markup
Internal linking improvements
Content rewritten around real search intent
Accessibility improvements
Mobile optimization
These updates help search engines better understand the organization's services while making it easier for families searching online to discover HANDS.
Following launch, the website began ranking for more relevant searches related to preschool, parenting support, family resources, and early childhood services in Wyoming County.
A Website the Organization Can Easily Manage
One of the most important improvements wasn't visible to visitors.
The new Squarespace website provides the HANDS team with a significantly easier platform to manage internally. Staff can confidently update pages, publish announcements, edit content, and maintain the website without relying on complicated development tools.
Giving organizations ownership of their website is one of my primary goals with every project.
Modernizing Email with Google Workspace
The project extended beyond the website itself.
HANDS was also transitioning from an aging private email server to Google Workspace, giving staff a more reliable, secure, and collaborative email platform.
I managed the migration to ensure a seamless transition with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations. Existing email accounts, messages, and communications remained intact while the organization gained access to Gmail and Google's suite of productivity tools.
The Results
The redesigned website now provides a much stronger digital foundation for HANDS of Wyoming County.
Following launch, the organization experienced:
Increased website traffic
Improved visibility in Google search results
Better rankings for relevant local searches
A clearer presentation of programs and services
Simplified navigation for families seeking support
A modern website that's easy for staff to update
A successful migration to Google Workspace for organization-wide email management
Most importantly, families can now quickly understand what HANDS offers and confidently take the next step toward accessing the resources they need.
